Lesson 4 of 8

The cash flow statement

Cash is harder to move than revenue, and Synchronoss restated 190 million dollars of it without the cash changing. Here is exactly what can still be moved.

In one minute

  • In a settled order dated 7 June 2022, the Commission found that Synchronoss restated roughly 190 million dollars of cumulative revenue, and the cash customers had paid did not change.
  • Operating cash flow is harder to move than revenue because it needs a bank transaction, but its boundary with the investing section is an accounting judgement.
  • Profit and operating cash flow can point in opposite directions for entirely ordinary reasons, which is why neither one is the safe number on its own.

People reach for operating cash flow when they distrust profit, on the theory that cash is a fact and profit is an opinion. Half of that is right. The total of the three sections is a bank balance and cannot be argued with. Which section a flow lands in can be.

Micron: profit and operating cash flow, three filed fiscal years

  • FY2023 net loss−$5,833m
  • FY2023 operating cash flow$1,559m
  • FY2024 net income$778m
  • FY2024 operating cash flow$8,507m

Why cash resists

Synchronoss announced in July 2018 a restatement of its audited statements for the fiscal years ended 31 December 2016 and 2015, and restated selected data for 2014 and 2013, covering approximately 190 million dollars in cumulative revenue. The Commission's settled order of 7 June 2022 describes three categories, one of which was converting multi-term software-as-a-service agreements into perpetual licences and recognising the revenue upfront rather than over the term.

Consider what that did to cash. Nothing. The customers paid on the schedule their contracts set, and the bank received what it received. Recognition moved 190 million dollars of revenue between periods and the cash line stood still, which is precisely why a reader who compares the two catches it.

The boundary that can move

The resistance is not absolute, and it sits at one place: the line between operating and investing.

Spending cash on something the company capitalises leaves the operating section entirely and appears under investing. Development costs, cloud implementation costs and interest incurred during construction are all candidates, and each has a rule about when capitalising is required rather than permitted. A company that capitalises more of its spending reports higher operating cash flow with no change to the cash in the bank.

Collections can move too. Selling receivables converts a future operating collection into cash today, and the classification of the proceeds depends on the structure of the sale.

Two ordinary reasons the two lines diverge

Micron's fiscal 2023 is the clearest example available in a recent filing. The company reported a net loss of 5,833 million dollars and positive operating cash flow of 1,559 million dollars in the same year. Two non-cash charges explain most of it: depreciation and amortisation of 7,756 million dollars, and a provision of 1,831 million dollars to write inventories down to net realisable value.

Share-based compensation does the same thing in the other direction. Under ASC 718 it is an expense in the income statement and a non-cash add-back in the cash flow statement, so it reduces profit and does not reduce operating cash flow at all. Cisco charged 3,830 million dollars of it in fiscal 2026.

What to open

The classification of capitalised spending sits in the significant accounting policies note and in the investing section itself, where a growing line for capitalised software or development costs is visible against a flat capital expenditure line. A sale of receivables has its own disclosure. And the reconciliation at the top of the cash flow statement lists every non-cash add-back by name, which is where the two ordinary divergences above are readable in one column.

Check yourself

Synchronoss restated approximately 190 million dollars of cumulative revenue. What happened to the cash customers had paid?

  1. It was refunded
  2. Nothing: the cash arrived on the schedule the contracts set, which is why comparing revenue with cash catches a recognition change
  3. It moved into the investing section

Show the answer

Answer: B.

Recognition decides which period revenue lands in. It does not move the bank transaction, so a revenue restatement of that size leaves the cash line untouched.

Which boundary inside the cash flow statement is an accounting judgement rather than a bank fact?

  1. The total of the three sections
  2. The line between operating and investing, because capitalised spending leaves the operating section
  3. The opening cash balance

Show the answer

Answer: B.

The total is a bank balance. Whether a given cash outflow is an operating cost or a capitalised asset decides which section it sits in, and that is a judgement with a rule behind it.

Micron reported a net loss of 5,833 million dollars in fiscal 2023 with positive operating cash flow of 1,559 million. What mainly explains it?

  1. A sale of receivables
  2. Non-cash charges: 7,756 million of depreciation and amortisation and an 1,831 million inventory write-down
  3. An error in the statements

Show the answer

Answer: B.

Both charges reduce profit without moving cash, so they are added back in the reconciliation at the top of the cash flow statement.

What this leaves out

  • The Synchronoss matter was settled and the respondent consented without admitting or denying the findings, which are not binding on any other person or entity.
  • Micron, Costco and Cisco appear here only as sources of filed figures. Nothing in this lesson says or implies anything about the conduct of any of them, and none is the subject of any action described in this course.
  • Capitalising spending is required by the standards in defined circumstances and is not evidence of anything on its own. What the lesson claims is only that the choice moves a flow between two sections.
  • Nothing here is advice about any security.
