Running it end to end · Course 1 of 3
A cyclical, end to end
Nine filed years of one homebuilder, the ratios that came back n/a, the maturity ladder that answers instead, and a written set of conditions at the end.
Somewhere in the academy a reader has to run the whole method on a company where it does not go smoothly. This is that course.
The existing applied course takes a stable business, prints ten years of eight figures and works out what moved. Everything it teaches holds. What it does not meet is a filer where the balance sheet has no current split, the income statement has no interest line, half the standard ratios come back n/a for stated reasons, and the ten-year average is the wrong number to compute in the first place.
The company, and why it was chosen
Toll Brothers, Inc., a homebuilder, fiscal years ending 31 October. Three reasons, none of them about what anybody thinks of it.
Its filed record is long enough to contain more than one state of its industry. Its statements have the awkward shape described above, so the n/a lesson is unavoidable rather than contrived. And its five-year maturity schedule is filed every year, which gives the credit question a real answer where the ratios give none.
Nothing in this course is a view on the company, its management or its shares. Every sentence is past-tense arithmetic on figures filed with the SEC.
The seven lessons
Choosing the window, which at a cyclical business is the decision that determines every average computed afterwards. Building the table. Reading the two absences. Normalising without averaging away the thing being measured. Reading the ladder beside the cushion. Enumerating what the record cannot settle, which is most of what decides the next decade. And writing the conditions.
What it does not do
It does not reach a value. There is no price anywhere in it, and the next capstone is where a value gets built.
Nothing here is a forecast, a policy position or a view about any security, and ValueScreener gives no advice.
One company worked, not a method that transfers by itself
A cyclical, end to end is 7 lessons running the whole method end to end on filings that were current when it was written. It is one company on one date. The order of the work carries over; the readings do not, and none of them is about a company you hold.
