Lesson 3 of 7

The two ratios that came back n/a

Reading an absence. No current ratio because the balance sheet is unclassified, no coverage because interest is capitalised, and what each says.

In one minute

  • An absent current ratio at this filer says its operating cycle is longer than a year, which is the most important fact about its working capital.
  • An absent coverage ratio says the cost of credit is not on the interest line, which says where to go looking.
  • Both absences narrow the search. A substituted ratio would widen it and would answer a different question.

Four rows were missing from the table. This lesson reads the two that matter most, and the reading is a genuine finding rather than a data problem.

What this filer produces and what it does not

Computed from the filings

  • Fixed asset turnover, 40.11 times.
  • Capital expenditure to revenue, 0.79 percent.
  • Free cash flow conversion, 0.76.
  • Operating leverage, negative 14.16.

Refused

Reads n/a

  • Current ratio and quick ratio.
  • Interest coverage.
  • Debt to equity, for want of a filed total debt line.

The right-hand column is refused, and each refusal follows from something stated in the filing itself.

Source: Toll Brothers, Inc., figures stored by the product from the annual report on Form 10-K for the fiscal year ended 31 October 2025, accession 0000794170-25-000112, read 16 September 2026.

Absence one: no current and non-current split

A classified balance sheet separates assets and liabilities due within a year from the rest. It is the usual presentation and it is not required of every filer: an entity whose operating cycle is longer than a year may present an unclassified balance sheet instead.

That is exactly what this filer does, and no total current assets or total current liabilities figure appears anywhere in its tagged filing history. So there is nothing to divide, and the current ratio and the quick ratio do not exist.

What that tells you is more useful than the ratio would have been. The operating cycle here runs from buying land through developing it to closing a house, and it is measured in years. The distinction between current and non-current, which is what a liquidity ratio rests on, does not carve this business at a joint.

Absence two: no interest on the income statement

Interest is capitalised into inventory under ASC 835-20 and released through cost of sales as homes close. The income statement therefore reports no interest expense in most years, and where a filer reports zero against a positive operating income the product refuses the coverage figure rather than printing a very large one.

What that tells you is where to look. The cost of credit is inside the gross margin row of the table in the previous lesson, blended with everything else, and the cash actually paid is disclosed with the cash flow statement.

The third absence, and why it is different

There is no debt-to-equity figure either, because no filed total debt line is stored for this filer. That one is a data absence rather than a structural one: the maturity schedule in the note carries the principal, and a reader assembling it by hand can compute a leverage ratio the automated figure cannot.

Distinguishing the two kinds of absence is worth doing every time. A structural absence is a finding. A data absence is a gap, and a gap can sometimes be closed by hand.

What does an absent current ratio tell you at this filer?

  1. That the company does not disclose its working capital
  2. That its operating cycle is longer than a year, so the current and non-current distinction does not carve the business at a joint
  3. That the balance sheet is unaudited

Show the answer

Answer: B.

The operating cycle runs from buying land to closing a house and is measured in years, which is why the filer may present an unclassified balance sheet.

Where is the cost of credit at this filer?

  1. In operating expenses
  2. Inside gross margin, having been capitalised into inventory and released through cost of sales, with the cash paid disclosed with the cash flow statement
  3. Not disclosed anywhere

Show the answer

Answer: B.

ASC 835-20 requires capitalisation while the asset is being readied. The absence on the interest line is what tells a reader to go looking in those two places.

What is the difference between the missing current ratio and the missing debt-to-equity figure?

  1. There is none; both are data gaps
  2. The first is structural and is a finding; the second is a data absence that a reader can close by hand from the maturity note
  3. The first can be estimated and the second cannot

Show the answer

Answer: B.

Distinguishing the two is worth doing every time, because only one of them can be repaired by more work.

  • ASC 210-10-05-4 on the classified balance sheet and ASC 835-20 on the capitalisation of interest.

What this leaves out

  • The four refused figures are refused for this filer in this product. Another source may print a number for some of them by making an assumption, and the assumption is what the refusal avoids.
  • Cash at one year end covering three rungs of a schedule is a fact about one date. Cash will be spent and generated in the intervening years.
  • Operating leverage of negative 14.16 comes from a revenue change of 1.11 percent, and a ratio with a denominator that small is unstable. It is listed here as a computed figure, not as a reliable measure.
  • Nothing here is a view on Toll Brothers or on any security.

A step of the work, on one company

Lesson 3 of 7 of A cyclical, end to end. It is one step of the method, done on filings that were current when it was written. The step transfers to your own company; the figures in it do not.
