Reading a company through the cycle · Course 1 of 5 · Credit in the accounts
Credit conditions and the accounts
A credit reading changes which numbers on one balance sheet are load bearing. It changes nothing about when to act, and this course draws that line first.
The cycle track argues. This track measures. Those are different activities and the gap between them is where most of the damage in this subject gets done, so the first course on the bridge spends eight lessons on the gap itself.
A reader arriving here has finished a theory of credit and knows how to read a balance sheet. Both halves are assumed. What neither half supplies is the join, and the join has one honest form: a credit reading tells you which numbers on a particular company's balance sheet are load bearing right now. It tells you nothing about what happens next, to that company or to anything else.
Why the boundary comes before the material
The order is deliberate. Lessons 1, 7 and 8 are about what a reading is for and what it is not, and they surround the five lessons of actual measurement. That looks defensive and it is: a reader who learns to find the price of credit in a filing before learning what the finding may be used for has been handed the sharper half of a tool.
The three sentences this course refuses to write, in any form, are that conditions suggest something, that a company is late in anything, and that a reading implies a move. None of them is a measurement. Each of them is a forecast, and a forecast about a security is the one thing ValueScreener does not produce anywhere.
What gets measured
Five lessons in the middle do real work. Where the cost of borrowing hides in a filing, which turns out to be three places and not one. Interest coverage across every covered US company with filed statements, which produces a median most readers guess wrongly. Which part of a company's debt reprices and which part does not. And the lag between a rate moving and a filing showing anything at all, which is the single most under-appreciated fact in this whole subject.
Where this sits
First of five bridge courses. It is the shortest of them and the one that decides whether the other four are education or advocacy.
Nothing here is a forecast, a policy position or a view about any security, and ValueScreener gives no advice.
Which numbers carry the weight, not what comes next
Credit conditions and the accounts is 8 lessons on which liabilities start carrying the weight when credit stops being cheap. Where the cycle stands today, and what it does next, are not in it: nothing here is a forecast, and no company you hold is read.
